How to write the letter A in cursive

Capital A starts at line 1. Slide down to line 3 in one slanted stroke, lift, come back up and make the second slant, then cross the two near the middle. Small a sits in the middle space between line 2 and line 3: round the belly first, then add the straight back and a small exit hook.

What to watch on four-line copy

Keep the two slants of capital A meeting in a point at line 1, and put the crossbar at the middle, not near the base.

Neither form has a tail, so nothing drops into line 4.

The mistake to correct first

Children draw small a as a circle and then attach a stick, like print. Start on the right side of the belly and go anticlockwise, so the pencil finishes at the back with an exit hook already pointing at the next letter.

Practice strip

Trace the shape three times slowly, then write the pair on your own four-line copy. Two minutes a day beats one long session on Sunday.
