Capital M begins with an upward stroke to line 1, then two rounded humps that both come down to line 3. Small m sits in the middle space with two humps of the same width. Count the legs out loud with your child: m has three legs standing on line 3, and n has two.

What to watch on four-line copy

Even spacing matters more than the shape. Uneven humps make the whole word look shaky.
Keep the tops rounded. Pointed tops turn m into a run of v shapes.
Small m never rises above line 2.

The mistake to correct first

A third hump appearing at speed, so mother comes out as mmother. Ask the child to count the legs after writing the letter, not while writing it.

Practice strip

Trace the shape three times slowly, then write the pair on your own four-line copy. Two minutes a day beats one long session on Sunday.
