How to write the letter U in cursive

Capital U begins with an up stroke to line 1, curves down to line 3, rounds across the bottom, and rises back to line 1 before dropping into a joining tail. Small u is the same shape inside the middle space between line 2 and line 3, and the bottom stays rounded.

What to watch on four-line copy

Round bottom for u, pointed bottom for v. Say it out loud while the pencil is moving.
Both legs reach the same height. The second one usually ends up shorter.
u joins easily to n, m and r, which makes un, um and ur good early joins.

The mistake to correct first

A pointed base, so sun reads as svn. Slow the bottom curve down instead of repeating the whole letter twenty times.

Practice strip

Trace the shape three times slowly, then write the pair on your own four-line copy. Two minutes a day beats one long session on Sunday.
